Shutter Speed Sculpture
JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA 2022
"F1 - T13" is a permanent interactive art installation supported by the Saudi Arabian Motor sports Federation, capturing the essence of speed, movement, perspective, and light. The sculpture is deeply inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the region, particularly the intricate wood lattice windows of Albalad, the historic area of Jeddah. These traditional wooden screens, known as "mashrabiya," are celebrated for their geometric complexity and ability to create dynamic patterns of light and shadow. The installation translates these historic design elements into a contemporary form, merging them with the exhilarating motion of Formula 1 racing cars. This fusion results in a work that celebrates both the timeless beauty of Islamic art and the modernity and excitement of motorsport. The dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the installation mirrors the swift movements of racing cars, creating a visual symphony that honors both tradition and innovation.

The structure itself is constructed from timber beams, a material chosen for its warmth and versatility. The design features a staircase that allows visitors to physically engage with the artwork, providing an immersive experience as they explore the installation from various angles. The journey through the sculpture is designed to be a sensory exploration, where each step reveals new perspectives and insights. The staircases' deliberate design encourages visitors to consider the relationship between space, form, and movement. As they ascend and descend, they encounter a series of vistas that highlight the fluidity of motion and the intricate interplay of light and shadow. This experience emphasizes the convergence of art and engineering, showcasing how geometric forms inspired by Islamic designs can harmonize with the sleek, dynamic lines of Formula 1 cars.
